The cherry blossoms this year is forecasted to bloom on March 21, 2016 and be in full bloom on March 28, 2016. Cherry blossom viewing is more or less a big event for Japanese and is also a sight which foreign visitors wish to see at least once if visiting Japan. If a glimpse of tens of cherry blossom trees is your preference, stopping by in the central Tokyo like Chidorigafuchi, Hamarikyu, Tokyo Midtown, Meguro, will do, but to truly enjoy the Japanese style cherry blossom viewing –eating and drinking under cherry blossom trees—a good place to go is Koganei Park.

Koganei Park is located at Musashi-Koganei Station just 30 minutes from Shinjuku on the Chuo Line. This park has large body of green grass for visitors to bring picnic sheets and food to spread out on. Before hopping on the bus headed to the Koganei Park from Musashi-Koganei Station, visitors should go takeout food shopping at a department store or supermarket and to 100-yen shop to buy a picnic sheet, hand wipes, paper plates, paper cups, etc. needed to enjoy cherry blossom seeing.

What is good about Koganei Park is that this place is not just a park; inside the park is Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum where visitors can see the transition of Japanese housing since premodern times and actually enter the buildings and stores, experience architectural remains, and enjoy reproduction of cityscape. Although the park is free of charge, there is entering fee for the museum. However, the entering fee is minimal that it is definitely worth taking a look around.

If you want to take time to enjoy Japanese style cherry blossom seeing but also do not want to feel like you’ve wasted time by traveling from central Tokyo, Koganei Park is your solution.
