“The thick petals of this dark purple peony, surrounded by white arabesque, which suggest long, thriving live, stand out in the bright yellow background”
Old Kutani ware was developed in Kutani area in current Ishikawa prefecture. The specialty of this ware is its bright colors of blue, green, yellow, and purple. The dynamic composition of nature, such as mountains, flowers, trees, rivers, combined with artificial things like buildings is just stunning.
Kutani was developed to follow such marvel, and have been nurtured by many artisans. The depiction of flowers and trees with frames, which has Chinese atmosphere and it is natural due to the origin, Ming dynasty, is very representing this traditional art craft.
The peony flower in the center of one frame is surrounded by beautiful arabesque. Peony is thought to be very noble flower, a king of other flowers. The flower itself was brought from China, too, in 8th century, and was loved by noble people as a rare entertainment in the winter.
The thick petals of this dark purple peony, surrounded by white arabesque, which suggest long, thriving live, stand out in the bright yellow background, just like a king, or a queen. The scene next to the flower is like a Japanese traditional garden or a temple in the mountain in ancient China.
