Japan Marche Staff Blog : KUTANI PORCELAIN MINI PLATE “YOSHIDAYA-AOI”
Title: Vivid Expression of delicate flower petals and leaves
“the flower always turns to the sun”
Yoshida-ya is a well-established pottery kiln in Komatsu area in Kanazawa prefecture, where a lot of Japanese traditional arts and crafts have been nurtured. The founder Toyoda Den-emon was a successful merchant who was deeply attracted to old Kutani ware and opened his own kiln in 1824 at his last years. He later moved from old Kutani-production site to new Yamashiro area, since the creations were well accepted since the quality was superb.
Here, one of the current representative of potteries produced by Yoshida-ya kiln is this vivid green and yellow design with motif of mallow flowers. In this family of plant, there are lots of kind with different colors and shapes, but one thing in common is the thin, delicate five petals, which is depicted in bright yellow.
Also, the leaves are usually separated in five directions, like human hands, or have five leaf veins. In this design, the veins are also clearly shown as if they are claiming for their liveliness and energy for living.
The detailed design is almost a painting, and you will not be bored by watching the depiction of the flower (see how the centers of the flowers are depicted!). But why mallow flowers can be lucky goods?
It is because the flower always turns to the sun; even they grow under tree shade. It may be a great message to raise your head up even when you are in a heavy situation.
